“How does geothermal work?” It’s a question we hear a lot.
We love telling about the benefits of tapping into the earth to heat and cool your home or business. But everyone likes to learn in different ways.
- Some like to read how it works:
Although Wisconsin temperatures can range from sub-zero cold in winter to scorching hot in summer, several feet below the earth’s surface the ground remains at a relatively constant temperature. Like in a cave, this ground temperature is warmer than the air above it during the winter and cooler than the air above it in the summer.
The ground source heat pump takes advantage of this by exchanging heat with the earth through a ground heat exchanger.Geothermal heat pumps can heat, cool, and even supply the house with hot water. Compared to typical air-source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps are quieter, last longer, need little maintenance, and do not depend on the temperature of the outside air.
